Boat trip up the Douro River
From Porto to the wine producing region of Douro
Up the river from Porto & Gaia is the Douro valley, an historical wine producing region with terraced slopes boarding the river. Distinguished as a Unesco World Heritage location, it is the source of the Port Wine that comes to rest on the quayside of Gaia, and a perfect destination for a relaxed day trip.
The harvest season, usually starting around the second half of September, is a special time to visit as the many Quintas (wine estates) in the valley become alive. Grapes are picked by hand, the traditional way, and special activities are available for visitors – from helping with the harvest, to stomping grapes barefoot in old stone vats, to simply enjoying special food and wine tasting events.
Getting there:
- Take the train from Aguda to Gaia – General Torres station. Walk down to the Cais de Gaia, the boat quay on the riverside in Gaia.
- Board the boat, travel all the way to Peso da Régua. Depending on the type of ticket and the day of the week, there might be a visit and wine tasting included.
- Return by boat to Cais de Gaia or by train, to Porto Campanhã.
Useful info:
- There are several companies travelling up the river on a daily basis, with a varied offer . Reserving a ticket in advance, by phone or online, is recommended – particularly during high season.
