River Paiva Walkways
Raw nature and unique architecture
Winner of the 2016, 2017 and 2018 World Travel Awards, the Paiva Walkways are a riverside path located on the left bank of the Paiva River, in Arouca, in an area of natural beauty and cultural heritage. The NY Times dedicated a short piece to this destination (external link)
The walkways are entirely built of wood, winding up and down along the river valley, in a fascinating blend of architecture and landscape. The path is 8 km long in a natural sanctuary along the clear waters. The route extends from the river beaches of Areinho and Espiunca, with the Vau beach lying between them. Espiunca is the highest point, and a better starting location.
There are parking places on both ends of the path, with a taxi service running between these. The path has several sections with stairs, making it not-accessible for people with reduced mobility or on a wheelchair. Tickets should be bought in advance, either online or at the Tourism Office in the nearby town of Arouca.
The Walkways are part of the Arouca Geopark, recognized by UNESCO as a Geological Heritage of Humanity. The Geopark offers a memorable journey through biology, geology and archaeology in a stunning natural scenario.
